1.ISLAND [IN, ON] Существительное island 'остров' употребляется с предлогами in и on; словосочетания in the island и on the island синонимичны (соответствуют русскому 'на острове'). In the island употребляется, когда речь идет о крупных островах (обычно группах островов): in the Canary Islands, in the Philippine Islands. On the island употребляется главным образом с названиями небольших, малонаселенных или необитаемых островов: on the Christmas Island, а также в тех случаях, когда существительное island употребляется без географического названия: on an isolated island, on a small coral island. 2.
